There are on both sides of the world men who seek.

Frantz Fanon

In order to evoke the African world of the first encounter and before the great changes of the centuries to come,

I have decided to depict a divination ceremony. Here are cowry shells, the rope of Fâ and Kola nuts,

which are common divination tools in the region as a whole. The Royal Python,

worshipped across the Gulf of Benin is assigned the role of supporting the universe in the myths surrounding the world’s creation.

Many temples and nunneries are dedicated to him. He is harmless to man but is the cruel enemy of rats and mice.

The gourde at the priest’s feet is the symbol of the esoteric world. Its contents, invisible and impalpable, represent the social link.

It must remain closed or society will disperse and die out.
